Field signs. Operenie gray-sizoe with burovatym shade, a dark back, neck clean gray-colored sizogo; bridle and red forehead. The young birds whitish-gray head, back of the intensive fox-brown bloom. Wing 474-545 mm (Ivanov, Shtegman, 1978). Voice higher, quiet and raucous than the gray crane (Böhme et al, 1998).

Distribution. North America from Alaska east to Baffin Island. To the south to California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida. To the north to the Arctic coast. Islands: Baffin Island, Banks, Devon, Victoria, Prince of Wales, Somerset, Southampton, Vancouver, Queen Charlotte, Cuba, Pinos. East Asia from the basin Alazei east to the Bering Strait and the lower basin of Anadyr. To the north to the Arctic coast. To the south to the Caribbean Penzhiny. Kamchatka (Stepanyan, 1990, 2003).
