Predatory birds, that lead a predominantly night way of life. The base of hooked beak is covered with the skin, [voskovitsey] , usually finned. Feet are strong, frequently finned to the claws themselves; claws strongly bent, very sharp. Tail assembly is very soft, is friable. Wings are large, are wide and are rounded, [polot] very maneuverability and noiseless; this greatly helps tracking and pursuit of output, which the owls find, using both the sight, and by wonderfully developed rumor. They are encountered in all natural zones from the tundras to the deserts and the mountains. The majority of forms dwells in the scaffolding. They nest on the earth, the cliffs, on the trees, in the hollows or in the structures. Many forms live settled or accomplishing irregular migrations, but some regularly fly away to the winter to the south. Food - in essence rodents and bird, in small owls - insects. Within the limits of Russia the force is two families ([Shtegman], Ivanov, 1978). The claw of middle finger is not notched. Internal finger (without the claw) is shorter than the average. Facial disk, if it is developed, more or less rounded, is not heart-shaped ([Shtegman], Ivanov, 1978).
