Waterfowl medium or small size. At the warehouse body similar to the diver. Very good swim and nyryayut, on the ground moving with difficulty, holding the body almost vertically. Settle on the lakes with a rich vegetation. Nests built on floating islands. Downy chicks striped. Feed on small-scale fish and aquatic insects. In division one family: Pogankovye Podicipitidae, submitted by Russia in one genus: Grebe Podiceps Latham, 1787 (Ivanov, Shtegman, 1978).

All species of the genus occurring in Russia, live in the territory of Central Siberia.
